References, AI use report and submission PDF

From Cite and the Paper menu in the editor toolbar, add references, record where AI helped, and hand in a PDF with a cover page and contents.

Adding references

Press Cite in the toolbar to open Sources and citations. Under Find by DOI or title, paste a DOI or search by title to add a source. Details come straight from what is registered with Crossref. Sources without a DOI go in under Enter manually, and those entries are marked Check. RIS and BibTeX files from Zotero, EndNote or library databases load under RIS or BibTeX file, and a list you built on this device before signing in can be brought into a new document at once.

Citing in the text

Click where the citation goes, then open Cite in the toolbar. Press Cite here next to a source in My list, or press Cite on a search result to add it and cite it in one go. You can add a page number. Citations are drawn in the chosen style and all change together when you switch styles.

The reference list

Insert reference list, at the bottom of Sources and citations or in the Paper menu, puts the list under your References heading, or adds the heading and list at the end of the document if there is none. Press it again after changing the list and it is rebuilt in place. IEEE numbers sources in the order they are first cited. The list downloads as RIS or BibTeX for Zotero or EndNote.

The AI use report

When you accept a result from the editor's AI features, the date, feature, model, accepted length and the text exchanged are kept with the document. Discarded results are not. AI use report, in the Paper menu of the toolbar, uses this log and the writing ledger to show the share of typed, AI-accepted and pasted text, and builds an AI use statement with the items universities ask for. List AI used in other services yourself, and write your own contribution.

Logging is on by default. While it is off, AI use is not recorded and the statement says logging was turned off for part of the time. The shares count how characters entered the editor. They are not a judgment of authorship.

The submission PDF

Under Length and due date in the Paper menu, set a due date and a target length to see the days left and your progress. In Cover and submission PDF, fill in the cover fields, choose what to include (cover page, contents, AI use statement as an appendix) and press Save submission PDF. In the print dialog, choose Save as PDF. Save as PDF in the File menu prints with the same choices. Chrome and Edge print page numbers at the bottom, except on the cover. The contents list has no page numbers.

If the document contains text accepted from AI features, Cover and submission PDF shows a reminder. Your school and course AI policy comes first; include the AI use statement when it is asked for.
