How to import
Press Import a file in your document list or the sidebar and pick an hwp, hwpx or docx file. A new document opens with its contents, titled after the file name. While a document is open, Import a file as a new document under File in the toolbar does the same. Without signing in, you can import from the File menu of the editor demo, edit, and save a PDF. Changes made in the demo are not saved to an account.
Files are read in your browser
The file you pick is not sent to a server; your current browser reads it. Only the extracted text and formatting are saved to your account, never the original file.
What carries over
| In the file | After import |
|---|---|
| Paragraphs, line breaks, alignment | Kept. A line break inside a paragraph becomes a new line. |
| Headings | Hangul outline levels 1-3 and Word heading styles become heading blocks. A short line in clearly larger type than the body is treated as a heading too. |
| Text formatting | Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, text color and highlight are kept. |
| Lists | Bullets, numbered paragraphs and outline levels 4 and below become lists. Numbers and bullet marks follow the editor's style. |
| Tables | Only the cell text is kept. Text in merged cells goes to the first cell and the rest stay empty. |
| Footnotes, endnotes, links | Footnotes and endnotes become footnotes, and hyperlinks become links. |
| Equations | The equation script is kept as code. |
| Images, shapes, charts | Not carried over. After import you are told how many were left out. Text inside text boxes becomes paragraphs. |
| Paper, margins, headers, footers, page numbers | Not carried over. |
Files that cannot be opened
- Distribution copies are locked against editing by their authors, so they are not imported.
- For password-protected documents, remove the password in the original app first.
- Save pre-1997 Hangul files and old Word files (doc) as hwpx or docx first.
- Files over 30 MB, and files whose text exceeds the Free limit (50,000 characters) or the Plus limit (500,000), are not imported.
Save as PDF
Choose Save as PDF in the File menu of the toolbar and the print window opens. Choose Save as PDF as the destination and the current document becomes a PDF file, set in a clean default layout rather than the original page design. To add a cover page or contents, pick them in Cover and submission PDF under the Paper menu. The Android app cannot open the print window, so use a browser.
Proof of writing
Imported text is recorded in the ledger as pasted. An imported document therefore is not marked Typed by hand until most of its text has been typed here.
