Citation generator

Press Cite in the toolbar of the editor below to find a paper by DOI or title and cite it in the text; the reference list at the end of the document is rebuilt with it. Metadata comes straight from Crossref, so no made-up papers slip in.

Demo before sign-in: kept on this device only

Press Cite in the toolbar to find a source by DOI or paper title and cite it in the text.

Where the details come from

A DOI is looked up in Crossref and its registered metadata is used as is. Title searches only return works registered with Crossref. Books and web pages without a DOI can be entered by hand, and those entries are flagged so you check them once more.

Choosing a style

Follow the style in your assignment brief or the journal guidelines first. Without one, social sciences and education tend to use APA, the humanities MLA or Chicago, and engineering IEEE.

Frequently asked questions

Can I submit the result as is?

The details are copied from the registry, but schools and journals tweak the rules. Compare one entry with the example in your brief before you hand it in.

What if a source does not show up?

It has no DOI or is not registered with Crossref. Enter the author, year, title and journal by hand, or load a RIS or BibTeX file exported from Zotero or a library database.

Where is my list kept?

Only in this browser. Nothing is sent to a server. When you open a new document in the editor, you can bring the list in as its references.
