The pen-beats-keyboard finding already wobbled
In 2014, a paper by Mueller and Oppenheimer in Psychological Science spread widely. It was titled The Pen Is Mightier Than the Keyboard, and it reported that students taking notes on laptops scored lower on conceptual questions than students writing by hand. For years it was quoted as the reason to close laptops in lecture halls.
In 2019 another team ran the same experiment again (Morehead et al., Educational Psychology Review). Some trends favored longhand, but performance did not consistently differ between groups, and in their second experiment it did not clearly separate from a group that took no notes at all. Pooling the direct replications produced a small effect leaning toward longhand that was not statistically significant. Their conclusion: calling either method superior is premature.
So was the original paper wrong? Read the two side by side and what survives is not the device comparison but a different variable sitting inside it.
The variable was transcription
The 2014 paper measured how much of each student's notes overlapped with the lecture transcript, matching in three-word chunks. In the first experiment, laptop notes averaged 14.6% overlap with the lecture and handwritten notes 8.8%. Because a hand cannot keep up with a speaker, it is forced to compress and rephrase, and the authors read that forced summarizing as the path to comprehension.
The second experiment is the one to sit with. Before the lecture, the laptop group was told outright not to transcribe and to use their own words instead. Their overlap came out at 12.07%; the laptop group that heard nothing came out at 12.11%. Effectively identical. Conceptual scores did not separate significantly between the two laptop groups either. Transcription, it turns out, is not a habit that being told about fixes.
Which is why note-taking methods exist. Instead of resisting by willpower, you shape the page so that there is less room to transcribe in the first place.
Even a full-looking page holds about a third
A 2016 paper, reviewing earlier research, noted that students normally record only about one third of a lecture's important points (Luo, Kiewra and Samuelson, Instructional Science). The sharper number is in the next sentence: when a point is missing from the notes, the chance of recalling it later on a test is around five percent.
Put those two numbers together and you can see what happens in a lecture hall: whatever you miss is effectively gone. That changes the goal. Notes are not for capturing volume, they are for marking the gaps. A question mark next to the part you could not follow keeps more than two extra transcribed sentences would.
The Cornell layout splits the page into three
The layout comes from Walter Pauk, who taught study skills at Cornell, and it is laid out in his book How to Study in College; the university's own learning center still teaches it today. The structure is plain. A wide right column takes the notes you write during class, a narrow left column stays blank, and two or three lines across the bottom stay blank too.
The whole point is that the two blank areas get filled in after class. The narrow left column takes questions about the material on the right, and the bottom lines compress the page into two or three sentences. Review means covering the right side and answering only the left. This is the structure doing the job that willpower could not do in the previous section. Knowing you will have to write questions later changes what you write during class, and a summary line that stays empty makes it visible that the lecture did not land.
The left-right arrangement is not the essence. On a screen, body, cue questions and summary can sit as three stacked blocks and behave the same way. What has to survive is the order: leave it blank, fill it in later.
The lecture picks the method
Each method fits a different kind of lecture. Use the same notes for a class that hands out slides in advance and a class that derives everything on the board, and one of the two is guaranteed to be wasted effort.

Two minutes mid-lecture beats thirty afterwards
The 2016 study cited above also tested when to clean notes up. A group that paused during the lecture and revised at each pause did better, on both the notes and the test, than a group that spent the same total time after the lecture ended. Revising with a partner produced more original note content, and revising beat plain recopying, though both of those differences were modest.
Translated into something you can actually do: every time the lecture pauses, write one question about the part that just went by. The twenty seconds while the instructor opens a file counts as a pause. Then write the two-sentence summary before you get out of your seat. The moment you walk out of the room those two sentences move to the evening, and the evening always has other plans.
Can you still explain it from that page next week
When you change methods, the test of whether it improved is neither the volume nor the look of the page. About a week later, open that page, cover the body, and explain the material to someone who was not in the class. Wherever you stall is where the notes are empty.
Which method fits depends on the course, and two weeks of trying usually settles it. Whichever one you land on, though, if there are no minutes in your day for filling in the blanks after class, the method is only a name. Decide where those minutes sit in your timetable first.

So is it fine to take notes on a laptop?
It is. What the two studies jointly point at is verbatim transcription, not the device. The catch is that a keyboard can keep up with a speaker, which makes transcribing easy, and that ease works against you. If you take notes on a screen, put the constraint back yourself: keep the body area deliberately narrow, or set up the cue and summary sections in advance and touch only the body during class. Opening other windows mid-lecture is a separate problem, and no note-taking method solves it.
What do I write when the slides are handed out in advance?
Write only what the handout does not contain. The slides have already filled the body section for you, so your job is the aside the instructor made out loud, the example they reached for, and the line that hinted at the exam. Print the deck or keep it on screen, hang questions in the margins, and add a two-sentence summary on top of it when class ends. The moment you decide the handout means you need not write, all that class leaves behind is a file nobody opens again.
